Why is Sunscreen So Important?

Whether it is our doctor, a friend, or a family member, most of us have someone in our lives who is constantly telling us to use more sunscreen. We know we should, but it is just too easy to forget about it. Here are five reasons, all more permanent than sunburn, which will make you think twice before leaving the house without that bottle.
1. Sun Spots

Spending time in the sun without sunscreen is hard on our skin. Over time, the damage begins to reveal itself in the form of dark spots, commonly known as sun spots. These discolorations can appear on any part of the body that has been exposed to the sun, but they tend to show up on the face more frequently. There are creams that can fade these spots, but they cannot be removed without visiting a dermatologist.
2. Red Lines and Splotches

The sun's rays can also cause permanent red lines and unsightly splotches. Since our faces are not protected by clothing, they tend to bear the brunt of the damage. These red lines are caused by broken capillaries just beneath the surface of the skin. In most cases broken capillaries can be prevented by using sunscreen properly, but once they appear they cannot be removed without laser therapy.
3. Wrinkles

As babies we have very delicate skin, as teenagers we get acne, and over time we trade those blemishes in for lines and wrinkles. This is a normal part of life. The appearance of our skin is one way people estimate our age. Without the protection of sunscreen our skin can age prematurely. Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen every day to slow down the aging process.
4. Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most harmful consequence of soaking up the sun without sunscreen. Skin cancer is often thought of as a less serious form of cancer that is easily treated. This may be true in some cases, but in others it can be fatal. Cancer has ruined a lot of lives, and the treatment plan is very difficult. Fortunately, it has been proven that sunscreen reduces the risk of skin cancer.

Sunscreen is our best defense against sun spots, red lines, splotches, wrinkles, and skin cancer. It should be applied thirty minutes before you go out in the sun, and reapplied every hour as needed.
